Brilliant. No wonder Christians have "almost" ditched all of the OT. They just need to go that one step further and ditch God/Jesus full stop. That would make John about 95 years old at the absolute youngest when he wrote the Gospel...living a full 65 years past the average life expectancy of the time. To put that in context, that's the equivalent of a modern day person living to about 125 years old. How many 125 year olds do you know?

@garethac81 Sorry for replying twice but you have to remember there were also three different John's in the New Testament. John the apostle, John Mark and John the Baptist. John Mark wrote the book of Mark around A.D 60 making him the same age as Luke. Matthew wrote his book around A.D 60 as well, making him the same age as Mark and Luke. If the life expectancy of age during that time was 30 years of ago then you would be right but Psalm 90:10 and archeologist evidence tell me other wise.

So if Jesus ascended to heaven in A.D. 30 and all them were around the same age, then that would make John, the last gospel writer, around the age of 75-80 not 110. John was an apostle of Jesus, the same one who wrote the book of John. Matthew was one of Jesus' disciples. The book of Luke was written about A.D 60 making him around 60 years of age and the book of acts around the same time. Read Psalm 90;10 I'm praying for you

@43alley Being a fan for many years of unorthodox bible scholars, this is the first I've ever heard of this. And by unorthodox, what I mean is, scholars that seek out the original manuscripts to translate them for themselves rather than rely on others for this very reason. Out of all of them, and they are not few in number, none of them have ever mentioned stories being added to the bible. Quite the opposite, in fact. Of the stories left out, we won't know why until we can ask Him.

@skyesfury - You don't understand. That story does not appear in the oldest manuscripts of John. The oldest copy of John does not have that story, the newest copy does. So at some point, many years after that gospel was authored, and before all the different gospels and epistles were put into the collection called "The New Testament," a scribe who was copying John added that story. Then that copy was copied with the addition and so on. But it's missing from the earliest. That's my point.

@43alley As for Jesus saying exactly "the old testament no longer applies", he doesn't. For a couple reasons. One, it was not referred to as the Old Testament until much later (during King James' reign, I think). Two, the OT scriptures were mostly, but not entirely, a set of rules you had to live by to get to Heaven. Jesus' sacrifice made it so that those rules were no longer rules but guidelines. However, not everything in the OT was a rule. Ah, the bible isn't so simple as you thought, is it?
